The latest developments in assistive technology will be on display in Perth next month at the 2009 Technology Symposium and Showcase.

The two-day conference and exhibition will be held at the Independent Living Centre in Nedlands from 23-24 March.

More than 2,000 assistive technology items will be on display, from mobility items and bathroom accessories to communications technology.

The symposium will feature demonstrations of cutting edge technologies, including a live online classroom, an intelligent whiteboard, pod-casting, video conferencing and e-learning.

Attendees can also have a go at the Nintendo Wii fitness and sport applications which have been adapted for therapeutic use by the Independent Living Centre.

The symposium is open to healthcare professionals and members of the general public, who will be able to participate in panel discussions and workshops as well as getting to ‘play’ with the new gadgets and gismos on display.

One of the most anticipated panel discussions will consider the ethics of technology, looking at the question: ‘When do issues of technology overtake civil and human rights?’
