A Queensland nurse practitioner has won the Emerging Nurse Leader Award for her innovative work in the area of wound healing.

Michelle Gibb was recognised by the Association of Queensland Nurse Leaders for her leadership in establishing Queensland University of Technology’s (QUT) wound healing community outreach service.

Ms Gibb said it was an “amazing honour” to be recognised with such a prestigious award.

“To be nominated for the work I've done in wound management was amazing but to actually win the award, I still don't think it has sunk in,” she said.

QUT’s wound healing service aims to improve quality of life for wound sufferers by providing accessible treatment to the public.

As part of the award, Miss Gibb received a $1,000 scholarship to further her professional development

Between one and three per cent of people over the age of 60 experience a chronic wound like a leg ulcer and Ms Gibb said it was essential to conduct more research in the field.

“I think this award is great because it shows that wound management is recognised as a health and research priority,” said Ms Gibb.

QUT is the longest provider of tertiary nursing education in Queensland and has been educating nurses for over 30 years.
