The NSW Government has launched a series of television commercials encouraging people to consider a career as a carer.

It is expected that there will be 38,000 vacancies for paid carers in the state over the next five years as existing care staff retire and new jobs are created.

The three television ads, which were developed as part of a $4.3 million recruitment campaign, feature interactions between real clients and their carers.

One of the ads focuses on the relationship between Mr Lam, a 96-year-old widower, and his bilingual carer, Linda.

“I feel honoured to be involved in this rare opportunity,” Mr Lam said.

“Elderly people like me who’ve reached 90 plus years in age have been discarded by society and there is no space left for me.”

The ads are television available on a campaign website which also contains job advertisements and general advice for people interested in changing careers.

Employers can place ads on the site free of charge and people working in the caring professions can join up to participate in blogs and forums.

Other features include a career quiz, a jobs guide and true stories from carers.
