Movements in the sector have resulted in the recent announcement of two new CEO appointments from beyondblue and Alzheimer’s Australia, Victoria.

beyondblue’s soon-to-be new CEO, Dawn O’Neil AM, will officially take the reins of the depression initiative on 4 January next year. She will succeed the organisation’s current CEO, Leonie Young, to become its third national leader.

Ms O’Neil’s new appointment will follow on from her present position as CEO of the not-for-profit organisation, Lifeline, where she has been for the past 10 years.

“beyondblue is a crucial part of the mental health sector,” Ms O’Neil said.

“Its important work, particularly around stigma reduction, research, education and community awareness of depression and anxiety has helped countless Australians and their carers.

“I look forward to being a part of the beyondblue team and continuing this vital work.”

The Chairman of beyondblue, Jeff Kennett, spoke on behalf of the board in welcoming Ms O’Neil and farewelling Ms Young.

“Leonie Young leaves us at the end of the year after seven years at the helm of beyondblue, and the board and the community will be forever grateful for the professionalism of her tenure,” Mr Kennett said.

“After the enthusiastic start of the organisation she has overseen high standards of administration, and extended through our community partnerships a reach that is unprecedented.

“The board wishes Leonie Young well for the next phase of her career, and thanks her for her considerable contribution to addressing depression and mental health issues throughout Australia.”

Change on the Victorian horizon

The new CEO of Alzheimer’s Australia Victoria, Maree McCabe, is due to begin her new role this October.

The appointment follows on from the resignation of former CEO, Lynette Moore, in April this year.

Upon Ms Moore’s resignation, President of Alzheimer’s Australia Victoria, David Galbally QC, said: “After more than 13 years we have much for which to thank Lynette. Through her many years of commitment and service to Alzheimer’s Australia Vic, Lynette has overseen extraordinary growth and improvements in our organisation and she leaves it well-placed to continue meeting our important objectives.”
