Expansion plans for Montefiore’s flagship campus

The NSW Department of Planning is currently exhibiting the group’s 20 year master plan for the site.

The NSW Department of Planning is exhibiting proposals to expand the Montefiore Home’s flagship Randwick campus in Sydney’s east.

The proposal outlines a master plan for the site that will be implemented over the next 20 years with a total cost exceeding $100 million.

Although the plan was originally submitted to Randwick Council, it was later transferred to the planning department because of the size of the development.

The first stage of the expansion will see the addition of an extra 90 aged care places to the Randwick site, which already has 139 high care and 137 low care beds.

The following stages will see the construction of further beds, administration space, underground parking and a new child care centre.

Montefiore’s CEO said the first stage of the development will help to integrate the site with the surrounding community.

“There are retail plans for a community plaza that would be open to the neighbourhood and nicely landscaped,” he said.

“I imagine we would be looking at some kind of café or similar retail development.”

Mr Orie said Montefiore had always planned to develop the Randwick site further.

“Obviously we would need to assess the needs of older people and the demand for the different levels of accommodation,” he said.

“We have a waiting list that is sitting at about 100 people at the moment. I know that is different from what you anecdotally hear in the rest of the industry where there are often vacancies but we have got a very strong demand for placement.”

The proposal will be exhibited until the end of next month and Montefiore hopes the state’s planning minister will make a determination before the end of the year.
