Researchers, providers prepare for community care symposium

Better understanding the experiences of older people and support staff in community care will be the subject of an upcoming industry event.

The NSW division of the Australian Association of Gerontology (AAG) and aged care state peak body Aged and Community Services NSW & ACT will host the forum in Sydney on 18 November.

Titled, ‘When Worlds Collide: the Experiences of Older People and Staff in Community Care’, the event will discuss innovate research into community care and the implications for service providers, consumers and policymakers.

Professor Laurie Buys from the School of Design at Queensland University of Technology will present the findings of her research which studied diary entries, GPS tracking and live time feedback from older people and their support workers as they travelled around the community to understand their unique and shared experiences.

Other speakers include:

  • Anne Chamberlain, The Benevolent Society’s program development manager, community ageing and disability services.
  • Paul Sadler, CEO, Presbyterian Aged Care and chair of the National Aged Care Alliance Home Support Advisory Group.
  • Carrie Hayter, trainer and consultant.
