Staying active in SA

The state government has provided funding to community organisations that provide activities for seniors.

The South Australian Government has provided $380,000 in grants to help the state’s older people stay involved in their communities.

More than 70 organisations will share the funding to buy equipment or undertake one-off projects.

Grant recipients will use the money to set up projects to link older “grandriends” with younger people and provide a respite caravan to support older carers in remote areas.

Smaller equipment grants will be used to purchase things like pie warmers, vacuum cleaners and whiteboards.

South Australian Minister for Ageing, Jay Weatherill said his government wants to help older people play an active role in their communities.

“It’s important to provide support so they don’t become isolated and marginalised – and being involved in the community can be enormously beneficial to the health and well-being of seniors,” he said.

“These grants are about supporting community groups that provide activities for seniors.”

The Council on the Ageing in South Australia will also receive a $50,000 grant to organise a festival showcasing the contribution of seniors in October.
