Indigenous jobs in aged care

Over 300 indigenous workers will join the aged and community care workforce in the Territory.

Over 300 indigenous workers will find work in the aged and community care sector through the Commonwealth Government’s Northern Territory intervention program.

The jobs will be made available in home and community care and flexible, indigenous aged care services.

Participants in the scheme will gain permanent, part-time jobs that will make them eligible for superannuation, job security and opportunities for career progression.

Some full-time positions will also be made available with the funding.

“This is about providing community aged care services in remote communities where they are needed and creating jobs for local workers,” said the Commonwealth Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot.

Training for the community aged care positions will begin to be rolled out in conjunction with the Territory’s Department of Health and Families this month.

Four training providers based in the territory have been funded to roll-out the training.

The indigenous workers will receive the education and conduct the aged care work within their own communities.

More than 60 communities will receive funding under the program, including the remote Docker River community where an elderly woman died last year while in care at a flexible Aboriginal service.

The program is part of the government’s goal of halving the employment gap between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians.
