Inaugural Aged Care Commissioner moves on

Rhonda Parker decided not to re-nominate after reaching the end of her three year term.

 The government has praised former Aged Care Commissioner, Rhonda Parker for her commitment to the role.

Ms Parker became the inaugural commissioner in March 2007 and decided not to re-nominate for the position at the end of her three year term.

The federal Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot thanked the former West Australian Seniors Minister for her dedication.

“Ms Parker set about the role of Aged Care Commissioner with a strong commitment to the protection of older Australians receiving aged care services,” she said

“She came to the role with a wealth of knowledge and experience and her efforts will have a lasting effect on quality in the aged care sector.

“Ms Parker has made a significant contribution to the quality of care and safety of aged care residents through her rigorous scrutiny of the aged care sector. I greatly appreciate her efforts and her contribution.”

The government is now in the process of finding a replacement commissioner and has appointed Adjunct Professor John Kelly to serve as temporary commissioner.

Professor Kelly has a broad background in the health sector with experience in legal and management issues.

He is a consultant to Guild Lawyers in the areas of commercial, corporate and competition law as well as general regulatory compliance and governance.
