HammondCare appoints new dementia director



Dementia care specialist HammondCare has appointed Colm Cunningham to direct its Dementia Centre.

Mr Cunningham is currently the Deputy Director of the Dementia Services Development Centre at the University of Stirling in Scotland.

He has played an important role in the development of the research centre at the University of Stirling and has helped to establish satellite centres in London and Belfast.

Mr Cunningham is well known throughout Europe for his dementia research and has worked with health practitioners and academics in the Netherlands and Malta.

HammondCare’s CEO, Dr Stephen Judd welcomed Mr Cunningham to his new role.

“Our Dementia Centre has a strong reputation in Australia and overseas, and I am confident that the centre will be doing more than ever before to inform on research and promote innovation and best practice in the actual delivery of service to people with dementia and their carers,” he said.

“It will also be seeking to do more than ever before to educate a workforce which is confident and competent to support people with dementia.”

Mr Cunningham replaces Richard Fleming who has been appointed to an academic position at the University of Wollongong.

“I want to also take this opportunity to congratulate Richard Fleming on his appointment to a professorial position at the University of Wollongong in the Faculty of Health Sciences,” Dr Judd said. 

“I think I speak for all at HammondCare when I say that we have appreciated Richard’s unstinting passion to improve quality of life for people with dementia. We wish him well in his academic post.”

Mr Cunningham will begin his new role in November.
