Carers Australia CEO Ara Cresswell said the country’s 2.7 million unpaid carers were an integral part of Australia’s health system and were the foundation of the country’s aged, disability, palliative and community care systems.

“Being aware of the diversity of unpaid carers and caring situations in Australia, and providing relevant, ongoing supports, is vital to our economy and collective wellbeing,” she said.

Nominations can be made in four categories: the young carer award, foster and kinship carer award, family carer award and caring in the country award.

Claire Robbs, the chief executive of social services provider Life Without Barriers, said unpaid carers often go unnoticed in the community despite the immense workload they take on, and the significant commitment they show to the family members and loved ones they care for.

Nominations close 6 September and state and territory finalists will be announced in November.
