LGBTI training available for aged care workers

ACON has launched a training website for people working in aged care in a move that the LGBTI health organisation says will improve inclusion practices and boost business.

ACON Pride Training says its LGBTI Inclusive Practice for Aged Care Sector courses will help organisations attract and hold onto new clients, improve best-practice person-directed care and boost knowledge of the health and wellbeing issues faced by LGBTI people.

The packages use interactive programs and a variety of activities, media and training resources to foster practical skills.

“Through learning about the lived experience of LGBTI Australians, participants can develop a deeper understanding of LGBTI communities, and gain better insight into sexual orientation, sex, body characteristics, gender and gender expression,” ACON CEO Nicolas Parkhill said.

“It is important service providers are invested in the wellbeing of all clients and consumers ensuring they are delivering inclusive and culturally appropriate services. It is about providing access, meeting duty of care and effectively addressing LGBTI health needs to provide a positive experience for all clients.”

Meanwhile,  South Australian aged and independent living services provider ECH told Community Care Review it had implemented a dedicated phone service where LGBTI people can enquire about its services in a safe and inclusive manner.

They can also arrange face-to-face meetings with a member of the Connect team to discuss their specific concerns.

The move followed a successful six-month trial that started in December, a spokeswoman said.

“The LBGTI Connect service has been implemented as a permanent service offering by ECH. Currently there are four LGBTI Connect team members.” she said.

ECH also runs a social connections program for LGBTI people giving them an opportunity to meet and socialise in a safe and inclusive environment. The program includes morning teas and visits to museums and art galleries.
