The aged care industry’s technology peak has launched a peer mentoring initiative to help build capacity and a technology-enabled aged care sector.

The Aged Care Industry Information Technology Council and Minister for Aged Care and Senior Australians Richard Colbeck have launched the ACIITC Mentoring Program at an event in Canberra on Wednesday.

The ACIITC, which is a joint initiative from Aged & Community Services Australia and Leading Age Services Australia, announced in April it was developing and recruiting for the initiative (read our backgrounder here).

Initial mentors come from ITAC National Hall of Fame and CIO Forum members and mentee participants for a pilot of the program come from five Australian states and overseas, the ACIITC said.

The program aims to bring like-minded people together to build capacity for technology and innovation in the aged and community care sectors through mentoring and building industry connections.

Dr George Margelis

ACIITC chair Dr George Margelis said the initiative would address innovation and technology in key areas of aged care operations and services.

“With a broad range of topics and interest areas along with professional advice from some of the leading names within the aged and community care innovation and technology sphere, this program will enhance the opportunities for greater innovation and uptake of technology,” Dr Margelis said.

Mentees come from a range of backgrounds including direct care and clinical roles and management, executive, board and governance positions.

“This investment by the Aged Care Industry Information Technology Council is providing a landmark program which is particularly relevant at this time with its focus on workforce development and industry capacity building,” said Dr Margelis, a mentor in the program.

Fellow mentors include Feros Care CEO Jennene Buckley, ACIITC CIO Forum chair Gavin Tomlins, ACIITC National Home Committee chair Anne Livingstone and ACIITC ITAC Committee chair Rod Young.

Key areas the program will explore include:

  • incorporating technology into strategic plans
  • planning investment in technology
  • building networks and relationships in the sector, including global networks
  • technology and innovation workplace practices
  • digital strategies
  • information governance and reporting
  • upgrading technologies
  • cybersecurity practices.

  1. Good to see this initiative.

The sector needs to be much more digitally literate and rather than focus on near horizon operational use of technology, think more deeply about how digital solutions can be used to deliver better quality services to older adults.

  2. This article is all about the monitoring program that has launched by the Tech council. It’s really to good to see such an initiative. It also contains the key areas where it will focus.
