New South Wales and Queensland aged care and retirement living provider Catholic Healthcare has received $1.25 million from former charity Forbes Jemalong Aged Peoples Association to contribute to the renovation of a retirement village.

The first stage of the new Catholic Healthcare’s Jemalong Retirement Living Village in Forbes, NSW, will feature 19 free-standing two and three bedroom open plan villas.

The renovations also include community and activities rooms and a new café and a chapel for the adjoining residential aged care facility.

Catholic Healthcare general manager of property Michael Lockwood said there were grateful to the former Forbes Jemalong Aged Peoples Association for their donation.

“They previously donated the land for this development, and their financial contribution is critical as we know that community infrastructure plays an important role in keeping people together in regional towns,” Mr Lockwood said.

The village will have 60 villas when all stages are competed. Stage one is due to open in June 2020.

Hume Community Housing has opened a new community garden at its seniors living complex in Cabramatta, Sydney.

The garden’s make over was one seven upgrade projects the provider received a Social Housing Community Improvement Fund grant for.

The seniors collaborated with community partners to create a garden space that reflected their cultural backgrounds and social needs.

The garden includes hand-painted butterflies, new walkway safety railings and a stationary bike.

Hume Community Housing executive manager of people and culture Sharn Chisholm said the clients asked for a place to congregate, socialise and get active.

“They wanted the space to be more reflective of their culture and background and expressed their safety concerns. We are proud that together we have created an inclusive and safe space that customers can feel comfortable in,” Ms Chisholm said.
