Australia’s biggest ever ageing study
A group of over 100 NSW researchers are surveying 250,000 people over the age of 45 to gain an unprecedented understanding of ageing.
Over 120 leading NSW health and medical researchers have come together for the 45 and Up study which has been formed to provide insights and knowledge into healthy ageing in New South Wales.
With the ultimate aim of recruiting 250,000 men and women aged 45 and over across NSW to participate over a number of years, the study is well on the way to being the largest of its kind ever conducted in the Southern Hemisphere.
The information collected by the 45 and Up Study will help researchers and policy makers gain a better understanding of how to prevent and provide the best possible care for conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, depression, Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes.
The 45 and Up Study is being conducted by The Sax Institute in partnership with The Cancer Council NSW, The NSW Division of the National Heart Foundation of Australia, NSW Health, beyondblue – the national depression initiative, and NSW Department of Ageing Disability and Home Care (DADHC).
Anyone aged 45 and over and living in NSW can take part in the study.
‘The beauty of the 45 and Up study is that it allows researchers to investigate just about anything you can think of’, says Associate Professor Emily Banks, Scientific Director of the 45 and Up Study.
‘For example, if a researcher wanted to better understand how a person’s social networks affect their long term health, we can use information gathered in the 45 and Up Study to investigate how the number of social contacts a person has impact on their wellbeing and quality of life.’
