Carer health remains hidden

A British survey has revealed that most carers hide their poor health.

Three quarters of British carers feel that caring has had an adverse impact on their health, according to a survey conducted to coincide with Carers Week in the UK.

The poll conducted by a coalition of carers’ groups also found that most carers try to hide their poor health in order to continue with their caring responsibilities.

Almost 95 per cent of the 2,000 carers who took part in the survey admitted to regularly “covering up” or disguising their health status, while one in five said they ignored feeling ill “all the time”.

Close to a quarter of carers reported that they regularly felt unable to cope with their day-to-day duties and nearly two thirds felt the same way “occasionally”.

“Whilst we were saddened to see the results of this survey so obviously highlighting the fact that such a great number of carers are “suffering” because of their role and responsibilities, we were not surprised,” said Carers Week manager, Paul Matz.

Mr Matz said health professionals have a vital role to play to ensure carers receive the assistance they need.

“With the right support, caring shouldn’t have to be a demoralising and stressful experience,” he said.

“It can be rewarding and fulfilling – but only if carers themselves are feeling mentally and physically well.”
