New grant supports specialised dementia care

Applications are open for eligible providers in western New South Wales to provide specialist dementia care under the national program.

The Specialist Dementia Care Program Grant Opportunity is now open to providers in the Western New South Wales Primary Health Network that have received an invitation to apply from the Department of Health and Aged Care.

The government’s SDCP provides care for people exhibiting very severe behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia who are unable to be appropriately cared for in mainstream aged care settings.

The intention is to have 35 Specialist Dementia Care Units established, with at least one unit in each of the 31 Primary Health Network regions. Pilot tender winner Brightwater Care Group began operating the first SDCU in September 2019 in Perth. There are now 17 SCDUs in operation and another six due to open in 2025, according to the department’s website.

Phase Two of the SDCP Grant Opportunity aims to identify aged care providers with the capacity to establish the remaining units through targeted competitive and non-competitive approaches.

Other existing and coming SDCP units around the country are operated by HammondCare, Villa Maria Catholic Homes, Barwon Health, Uniting Communities, Uniting, The Corporation Of The Synod Of The Diocese Of Brisbane, Tilburg Propriety Limited, Glenview Community Services and Good Shepherd Lodge Charitable Trust, Hall and Prior and Bendigo Health.

Applications can be done through GrantConnect and close 1 April, 2:00pm (AEDT).
