Hard to swallow

Seniors and healthcare providers need more education on under-treated voice and swallowing disorders, says new report.

Many older people are not seeking treatment for debilitating swallowing and voice problems, according to new research out of America.

A study conducted by researchers from the Duke University Medical Centre found in many cases, older patients simply accept swallowing issues – including difficulties caused by dysphagia and dysphonia – as part of the natural ageing process.

The project was conducted among 248 participants with an average age of 82.

While over half the patients with dysphonia and dysphagia were interested in treatment, only 20 percent actually sought treatment.

The researchers suggested that the medical community should actively attempt to assess and address these issues among older people.

They recommended the development of educational programs for seniors and healthcare providers to improve understanding of the signs, symptoms and available treatments for voice and swallowing disorders.
