Western Australian aged care provider Juniper established an onsite market stall in one of its aged care homes.
Residents and their guests at Juniper’s Annesley site located in the Perth suburb of Bentley have been treated to a display of fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables from local retailer Fresh Frontier, which supplies the not-for-profit provider with the produce used in the making of its meals.
Texture-modified options were also available so that all residents – regardless of dietary requirements – could participate and enjoy the food on offer. Residents were also served fresh juices and smoothies.
The fresh food market – part of Juniper’s Dignity in Nutritional Excellence program – was designed to promote healthy eating and cultivate social interaction.
“We invited residents from Juniper’s nearby homes to join in, making it a shared experience,” hospitality services manager Kerrie Hall said. “Our goal was to create an event that not only connects our customers with the food they eat but also fosters a sense of community and wellbeing.”
Among the variety of produce on offer: apples, bananas, oranges, kiwis, lemons and pears, which the residents took back to their rooms to create personalised fruit bowls.
Fresh Frontier managing director Dawn Murchison said the company was thrilled to be part of Juniper’s DINE program. “We understand the critical importance of nutrition in aged care and are committed to providing the freshest, most nourishing Australian-grown produce – our ageing population deserves the best.”
Following the success of the market stall event, Juniper has plans to trial the initiative at other homes across the state. “These markets are about more than just fresh food,” said Ms Hall, “they’re about engaging with life and each other.”
