Age is just a number, proves 90-year-old Carinity Wishart Garden resident Alvin McHugh with his recent decision to get baptised.

Close to 70 people attended the ceremony, including friends and family.

“Due to circumstances, I slipped through the cracks but now on reflection of my life, I now feel it’s time to be obedient to God’s wishes,” Mr McHugh told the gathering before being baptised.

Alvin McHugh was baptised at the Carinity Wishart Gardens seniors community by Pastor Tracey Valentine and Reverend Tim Winslade (supplied by Carinity)

Mr McHugh said his faith ebbed and flowed throughout his life, finding it particularly difficult to commit to religion following the death of his Baptist pastor father when he 17-years-old and in the years following the ending of his first marriage.

However, he also spoke of the way religion has comforted him – especially in the wake of his wife Elaine’s passing in September, who he was married to for 60 years and had moved to the not-for-profit organisation facility with him.

“It was only when I looked back over this period of my life that I came to realise [God’s] faithfulness to me,” Mr McHugh said

Carinity mission engagement manager Pastor Tracey Valentine performed the baptism with Reverend Tim Winslade and said it was a “privilege to stand alongside Alvin as he took this step of faith.”
