The best things in life are FREE

Macquarie University in Sydney will host a free public lecture for the general public and aged care workers to learn more about depression and anxiety in older people.

Aged care workers and members of the community are invited to attend a free public lecture about a world-first research program which examines a treatment option for depression and anxiety on Friday 14 October at Macquarie University.

The highly respected researcher Dr Viviana Wuthrich from the Centre for Emotional Health (CEH), will present her findings on the treatment of depression and anxiety in adults aged over 60 while raising awareness on the issue.

According to Dr Viviana Wuthrich, little is actually known about anxiety and depression in older people.

“While age 60 is not old by any means, our knowledge of anxiety and depression in people aged over 60 is limited,” said Dr Wuthrich.

“At the lecture I’ll cover the basics of mental health in older adults with a focus on anxiety and depression. I’ll talk about the common symptoms, the consequences if anxiety or depression is left untreated and a little bit about why this area is neglected in adults.

“As Mental Health Week is focused on understanding and improving the mental health of all Australians, it’s a great opportunity to hold the lecture and raise awareness of anxiety and depression in people over 60.”

By 2050, over a quarter of Australia’s population with be over the age of 65 and studies show 47 per cent of older adults who met criteria for major depression also met criteria for an anxiety disorder.

CEH, based within Macquarie University, is one of Australia’s foremost anxiety and emotional disorder support, treatment and research hubs.

The CEH clinic delivers support and treatment programs both in person and online. Its team of researchers lead cutting-edge research programs into the causes and treatment for anxiety, stress, depression and mental health disorders.
