Webinar showcases new dementia care strategies

Two projects are in the spotlight of this free online event hosted by Anglicare Southern Queensland.

A project to ensure people with dementia who go missing and are found alive is one of two programs in the spotlight in an upcoming webinar.

Hosted by aged care provider Anglicare Southern Queensland, the webinar will also showcase the team’s program providing tailored care for people exhibiting severe behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.

Next Wednesday’s online webinar features Associate Professor Margaret MacAndrew from QUT highlighting findings from the 3Ps to Getting Home Safely with Dementia project. Following, Vicki Cain – the clinical lead for Anglicare’s Specialist Dementia Care Program – will share key learnings from the delivery of the program.

“The Anglicare Research, Evaluation and Advocacy team created the webinar to educate and inform the community of the new approaches and strategies available to support loved ones living with dementia,” the team’s manager Leanne Wood told Community Care Review.

“Our speakers have decades of experience and knowledge to share, and they are passionate about supporting people with dementia and their families and carers.”

With the number of people with dementia in Australian expected to double by 2054 to over 800,000, this is an important area of care, she said.

The 3Ps to getting home safely

The 3Ps stand for prevent, prepare and prompt response. The initiative is a three-phase project that aims to ensure people with dementia who go missing are found alive. It addresses the greater risk that people with dementia have of becoming lost and consequently experiencing devasting outcomes.

The project involves developing, implementing and evaluating a set of resources to support residential aged care communities to successfully adopt the initiative. Next week’s presentation will highlight findings from the second phase of the research.

Specialist dementia care

Wednesday’s presentation draws on Anglicare SQ’s experience delivering the Commonwealth-funded Specialist Dementia Care Program. The SDCP provides high-level tailored care for people living with dementia who are unable to be effectively cared for by mainstream aged care services due to behavioural responses.

Ms Cain will share the provider’s ongoing learnings including about how best to reduce or stabilise a person’s behaviour in a dedicated dementia-friendly environment and support their move to a less intensive care setting.

The online event takes place on Wednesday 28 August from 11:00am -12:00pm.

“The webinar is free for everyone to come and learn about the new strategies and approaches in caring for people living with dementia,” said Ms Wood.
