Forum to hear international perspectives on personal budgets
Experts from the UK and Canada will address a symposium in Melbourne this month on the impact of individualised budgets on working conditions and quality care in the aged and disability sectors.
Experts from the UK and Canada will address a symposium in Melbourne this month on the impact of individualised budgets on working conditions and quality care in the aged and disability sectors.
The forum, hosted by RMIT University, will bring together researchers, industry and unions to discuss the international experience and lessons for Australia of individualised or ‘cash for care’ social care systems.
International speakers include Dr Shereen Hussein, principal research fellow at King’s College in London, who will discuss the impact of personalised social care on the wages and job security of direct care workers in the UK.
Dr Cynthia Cranford from the University of Toronto will present on North American trade union and disability group efforts to match flexible, responsive services with decent work for disability workers.
Professor Gabrielle Meagher from the Department of Sociology at Macquarie University will also reflect on the Australian experience to date.
Professor Sara Charlesworth from RMIT University and Associate Professor Debra King from Flinders University are currently leading the national Quality Jobs and Quality Care in aged care project in Australia.
The free half-day event takes place at 15 August at RMIT University.
