Leading consumer rights advocate to highlight issues facing Aboriginal people with disability
The Social Policy Research Centre at the University of New South Wales is hosting a seminar next month on meeting the needs of Aboriginal people with disability under the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
The Social Policy Research Centre at the University of New South Wales is hosting a seminar next month on meeting the needs of Aboriginal people with disability under the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
Damian Griffis, CEO of the First Peoples Disability Network (FPDN), will deliver an address raising attention to the issues confronting this disadvantaged group.
“We at FPDN now believe it is time for a call to action in regards to meeting the needs of Aboriginal people with disability, ensuring that National Disability Insurance Scheme quarantine the Aboriginal share of the scheme and this can only be done by establishing an understanding of the Aboriginal market, including reliable prevalence data,” said Mr Griffis.
“The potential for the NDIS to be a major contributor to support other social issues, such as employment in Aboriginal communities is the catalyst of a social change movement that we at FPDN have advocated for to improve the capacity of individuals and communities across Aboriginal Australia.”
It is estimated that the prevalence of disability amongst Aboriginal people is twice that of the non-Aboriginal population.
The First Peoples Disability Network is the national peak organisation representing Aboriginal people with disabilities and their families and Mr Griffis has been working within the disability sector for more than 20 years.
The seminar will take place at the University of NSW on 11 October, 12:30pm-1:30pm.
