LGBTI seniors set to celebrate NSW Seniors Festival

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) health organisation ACON is hosting a series of community events across NSW for LGBTI seniors as part of the NSW Seniors Festival.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) health organisation ACON is hosting a series of community events across NSW for LGBTI seniors as part of the NSW Seniors Festival.

Free movie screenings and afternoon tea parties will be held in six locations across the state on April 2, 3 and 10.

The acclaimed feature film Tab Hunter Confidential will be shown as well as a selection of LGBTI themed short films followed by afternoon tea, networking and access to local community health information. The annual event, Afternoon Delight, is in its 8th year.

ACON’s chief executive officer Nicolas Parkhill said he was delighted to be partnering with Queer Screen and NSW Seniors Festival to host the events for older LGBTI people and their friends and families, and hoped the activities would help reduce a sense of social isolation that many people experience.

“During the afternoon tea, which in selected locations will be served by drag performers, guests will have the chance to mingle, chat and have an opportunity to pick up local health information as well as take photos and discuss the movies”.

“It is a fun, light event that engages with all the diversity of our community,” said Mr Parkhill.

NSW Seniors Festival Ambassador, Robina Beard will also join in the celebrations.

Minister for Ageing John Ajaka commended ACON for growing the event so many more LGBTI seniors can celebrate the Seniors Festival with their peers.

“Afternoon Delight has become a Seniors Festival staple that specifically celebrates our older LGBTI community and I’m pleased to see it reach so many more people in NSW,” Mr Ajaka said.

The six event locations include Sydney, Newcastle, Sawtell, Shellharbour, Wagga Wagga and Lismore.
