The National Ageing Research Institute is hosting a half-day workshop on pain in dementia where aged care providers and healthcare professionals can hear from leading experts in the field of pain research.

Presenting at the event in February 2016 will be Professor Stephen Gibson, director of NARI’s clinical research division and director of research at the Caulfield Pain Management and Research Centre.

His current research interests include studies on pain assessment in people with dementia and the implementation of pain management guidelines in aged care.

He will be joined by Associate Professor Benny Katz, director of Geriatric Medicine at St Vincent’s Hospital and director of the Pain Clinic for Older People located at St George’s Hospital, who will draw on his longstanding interest in pain management in older people.

Dr Steven Savvas, a researcher at NARI will also speak at the interactive workshop on his latest clinical research in the field. He is currently the trial coordinator for a large multi-site clinical trial involving people with dementia in residential aged care.

Pain in older people with dementia can be difficult to identify and treat, however research over the last decade has seen the emergence of a number of promising assessment tools and management strategies.

The professional development workshop will cover key topics such as:

  • The prevalence and complexity of pain and dementia
  • Strategies, tools and approaches to identify and assess pain in people with dementia
  • How to treat and manage pain in people with dementia.

Suffering in silence: pain in dementia will take place on 24 February, 2016. For further information visit NARI’s website.
