COTA appoints Judd as inaugural fellow

COTA Australia has named former HammondCare CEO Dr Stephen Judd as the inaugural COTA Fellow.

Consumer peak body Council on the Ageing Australia has appointed former HammondCare chief executive officer Dr Stephen Judd the inaugural COTA Fellow.

COTA Fellows is a recently established program for individuals, who have made a substantial contribution to Australian public life and are fully or partly retired.

Appointees will include academics, senior public servants or senior industry figures who want to make a further contribution in their field of expertise.

COTA Fellows are expected to add a significant dimension to the intellectual life of COTA, contribute to policy agenda and generate output, such as position papers, a COTA Essay, conference presentation or research.

Dr Judd, a senior aged care industry figure who led aged care provider HammondCare for 25 years, has been appointed the program’s first fellow.

COTA Australia chief executive Ian Yates said the peak body was honoured Dr Judd accepted the invitation to join the program.

“COTA Australia looks forward to Stephen Judd’s strong contribution to our advocacy of the rights and interest of older people, especially those in need of additional support and care in later years,” Mr Yates said.

“Particular foci of Stephen’s Fellowship will be the future of residential aged care, especially dementia care, enhancing COTA’s input to the aged care reform process; and initiatives addressing social isolation and connectedness among older Australians,” he said.

During his time at the helm of HammondCare, Dr Judd expanded the provider’s footprint, pioneered cottage-style residential aged care for people living with dementia and led the sector in person-centred non-restrictive care for people with dementia with behavioural issues.

In January, Dr Judd was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his service to people living with dementia.
