Maggie Beer Foundation appoints GG patron
The charity has announced Governor General Sam Mostyn has joined its team.
The Maggie Beer Foundation has announced Governor General Sam Mostyn as the aged care charity’s inaugural patron.
The charity has been working with the aged care sector to elevate the food and dining experience in residential aged care homes since it was founded by Australian celebrity cook Maggie Beer in 2014.
Ms Mostyn, an Australian businesswoman and advocate, became the 28th governor-general of Australia in July 2024.
Maggie Beer Foundation chief executive officer Jane Mussared said it was an honour to welcome the Governor General as the organisation’s first patron.
“Her patronage is a wonderful expression of her role as Governor General in encouraging and recognising the efforts of individuals and groups who work every day to improve life in the nation and community,” said Ms Mussared.
“I thank [her] for supporting our ambition of making good food and good eating the reality for each and every older Australian.”
The primary focus of the foundation is to advocate, educate, and facilitate research plus upskill cooks and chefs working in aged care.
Its initiatives include online modules, training hubs, hands-on Trainer Mentor Chef Programs and moderation of a professional community for aged care cooks and chefs.
Ms Mussared said the essence of the foundation was reflected in Ms Mostyn’s swearing in speech to the Australian Parliament when she spoke of care as “the gentle thought and the outstretched hand that Australians have always been ready to share when great challenges present themselves.”
Ms Mostyn said the foundation’s team members under Ms Beer’s leadership were an example of people who have “seen an area of need and are committing their care, expertise and passion” to making a difference.
“I am delighted to serve as Patron of the Maggie Beer Foundation and look forward to supporting their work in the community,” she said.
