New health education coordinator in Vic
A large education and training provider has appointed a new business services manager who is no stranger to the benefits of education.
Chiquita Walsh is passionate about the benefits of education.
Victorian training group, Mayfield Education has appointed Chiquita Walsh to the new position of business services manager.
The former director of support services at Tallangatta Health Service has come a long way in her health career since starting as a cleaner at a local hospital over 20 years ago.
“We were living in rural Victoria, the children were little and money was scarce,” said Ms Walsh.
“I found casual work for two to four days each week and at that stage, there didn’t seem to be any further career prospects.
“One day the cook was ill and I had to fill in. It was Good Friday and I still remember that I cooked a fish dish with orange rind. I then found myself cooking for three days a week.”
After completing a TAFE course, Ms Walsh went on to become the hospital’s receptionist. In that role, she continued to study and take on new responsibilities before becoming the practice manager and ultimately the director of support services.
“I studied, networked and joined committees,” said Ms Walsh. “I found that I really enjoy working in the health sector and I love the challenge of taking on increasingly larger roles.
“It makes sense for me to be working for an education provider given that I’ve been so committed to ongoing training in my own career.”
In her new role, Ms Walsh is keen to focus on training opportunities for people in their 50s and 60s who wish to upgrade their skills. She is also interested in developing life skills courses for homeless people.
Mayfield Education is a Victorian education and training provider which that equips students with practical skills for working in the health sector.
