Sergi to lead new Care Economy CRC
Carmela Sergi is stepping from interim to full-time chief executive officer at the Care Economy Cooperative Research Centre following the recent funding announcement.

After three years as interim and part-time chief executive officer of the fledgling Care Economy Cooperative Research Centre, Carmela Sergi has stepped into the permanent and full-time role this week after funding was announced to establish the $129 million 60-partner hub to transform the sector.
She told Australian Ageing Agenda she will be prioritising collaborative research and development activities that will improve care during her time as CEO, and will focus on the CRC and its partners addressing innovation challenges and building workforce capability.
The CRC brings together the Australian care economy sector for the first time to collaborate and drive innovation, to share learnings across care sectors, and to upskill care workers, and Ms Sergi said she is excited to work with government to bring the CRC vision to life.
“We all share a passion and dedication to drive technology innovation in care, creating rewarding and well-remunerated careers for care workers and developing future contemporary care for increased quality of life and higher standards of living for all,” she told AAA.
“Together we will integrate technology to transform care services, address chronic skills shortages, and develop innovative products and services. The Care Economy CRC will cut across otherwise siloed care sectors, delivering a range of benefits, particularly for Australians who move between sectors – for example aged care and health or between early childhood education and disability. The Care Economy CRC will improve quality, safety, and sustainability of care for all Australians,” Ms Sergi said.
