A refresh sees the National Aged Care Advisory Council welcome four new and three returning members plus a new chair.

Professor Sue Gordon has been announced as the new chair of the National Aged Care Advisory Council.

Ms Gordon, who was previously the research director at Aged Care Research and Industry Innovation Australia, brings more than 20 years of physiotherapy practitioner experience to the role, and 18 years in academia.

During her tenure at Flinders University professor Gordon’s research included healthy ageing, pre-frailty, functional decline and the development of the aged care workforce.

The advisory council also welcomes the return of Anne Burgess, Craig Gear and Dr Sandra Iuliano.

“I’m looking forward to working closely with my fellow council members to provide trusted and timely advice to government that drives positive change and well considered outcomes across aged care,” said Professor Gordon.

“2025 promises to be another busy year and the council is keen to continue to engage closely with the sector and government, particularly on key reforms such as the new Aged Care Act and the Support at Home program.”

Minister for aged care Anika Wells said she looked forward to working with Professor Gordon and all other new and returning members.

“During the past three years, the National Aged Care Advisory Council has played an integral role in the government’s mission to improve the quality of aged care in Australia,” she said.

“Our focus for 2025 will not just be delivering Support at Home program and the new Aged Care Act but communicating with the sector to build confidence through the transition.

“Reform this significant cannot be achieved without the support and advice of groups like NACAC.”

The advisory council provides expert advice to the government on matters relating to the aged care sector and was established in response to recommendation seven of the Royal Commission in Aged Care Quality and Safety’s final report.

It was established in November 2021 and currently meets every six weeks.

It can advise on the implementation of aged care reforms, improving navigation and delivery of aged care services and building the capability of providers and workforce.
