IRT resubmits DA for village upgrade
Community-owned aged care and retirement village provider IRT has lodged an updated development application with Wollongong City Council.

Two years since withdrawing a proposed redevelopment plan for the Murranar Road and Edgar Street site, community-owned aged care and retirement village provider IRT has resubmitted an updated development application to Wollongong City Council.
The DA resubmission includes IRT’s request for the site to be known as Elements at IRT Towradgi Beach. It also includes further details on the flood and stormwater management plans, which had been the reason for the DA’s withdrawal in June 2024.
The resubmission of the DA also outlined IRT’s plans for the demolition of existing structures – originally built in the early 1970s – the redevelopment of the seniors housing development – which includes 87 independent living units – and the redevelopment of the neighbourhood shop with café and resident clubhouse. The resubmitted DA indicates the proposed changes would be completed in three stages.
The original DA for the retirement village was submitted in 2021 before being withdrawn and resubmitted in May 2023 to include more details on flood and stormwater management.
IRT said it has worked with experts to make a range of design improvements for this revised resubmission, and the DA is expected to go on public exhibition soon.
“IRT is committed to upholding the legacy of its founders by developing safe and secure environments that support the dignity and wellbeing of older Australians at every stage of ageing,” the provider said.
