EVENT:  ACHSM Breakfast forum – Brisbane
“Achieving a quantum leap in the reliability and safety of healthcare – can we do it?”

Australasian College of Health Service Management  (ACHSM) –  Brisbane,  presents guest speaker:  Dr Mark O’Brien, Medical Director, Cognitive Institute.  Dr O’Brien will reflect on his and the Cognitive Institute’s experiences of working in ten countries across the Asia Pacific, European and African regions to support reliable and safer healthcare practice and identify the consistent themes that appear to transcend culture. He will draw conclusions on practical steps that healthcare leaders can take to play their role in reducing unwarranted variability and to drive reliability and safety to higher levels.

EVENT:   Forum – Erigo events, Melbourne
“Allowing natural death: should we perform CPR in residential aged care facilities?”
Wednesday 17 April 2013 – 4.30 – 6.30pm

Associate Professor Bill Silvester (pictured), Director of the Respecting Patient Choices Program at Austin Hospital, will discuss his research findings about CPR policies and practices in residential aged care facilities. Bill Silvester is a physician and intensive care specialist at the Austin Hospital and president of the International Society for Advance Care Planning and End of Life Care.   Sabine Phillips will discuss the legal aspects of advance care planning – for the resident, their family and for the staff of residential aged care facilities. Sabine Phillips is a principal at Melbourne-based law firm Russell Kennedy, practising primarily in health and aged care law. 

This is a free event hosted by risk management firm, Erigo. It includes a product demonstration and wine and cheese. Bookings required.

APPOINTMENTS:   New Line-up for Meals on Wheels SA

South Australia’s largest community-based volunteer organisation, Meals on Wheels SA (MoWSA), has unveiled a new-look corporate structure as it prepares to mark its 60th anniversary later this year.  MoWSA describes the new structure as creating ‘a more regionalised, supportive and effective approach to its operations’ that will take the organisation into the future. 

Joining the executive in a newly created role is Mrs Julie Bonnici (picutrred above), General Manager Service Operations.  Recently in the role of Acting General Manager, Seniors and Lifestyle at Anglicare, Mrs Bonnici previously spent 10 years as a senior manager and regional manager at ACH Group.  Mrs Bonnici manages a support team of multi-skilled service operations staff each assigned to a specific region across the State.

MoWSA Chief Executive, Sharyn Broer, said: “The skills and expertise that Julie brings to Meals on Wheels will be of great help in developing and implementing a customer-focused organisational structure and ensuring the success of our 89 branches.”

Mrs Bonnici’s appointment follows that of Peter Neal as Manager, Strategy & Communications; David Smith as Manager of Corporate Services; and Rick Coronica as Manager, Facilities and Food Services; and completes the senior management team.

ADVOCACY:  Your Election Say

Want a say in what issues make the agenda for the federal election this year?  ABC News wants to know what issues will influence your vote in this year’s federal election, and which policy areas you are interested in hearing about.  Submissions will help inform ABC News’ election coverage as well as provide data for the Vote Compass voter engagement tool.

Consumer organisation, National Seniors is also asking its members to help shape the organisation’s 2013 election campaign list by completing a quick survey either online or in the April/May 50 something magazine.

Any concerns about employment, superannuation, the economy, welfare, health and aged care etc will be welcome. The survey results will be used in the Seniors Vote 2013 election campaign which will be launched later in the year.  The survey closes on 24 April. Members need their membership number and password to log in to the website.
