Construction begins on HammondCare Greenwich
The integrated health campus will feature new palliative care beds and dementia-specific residential care beds, while seniors’ living apartments will be built nearby.
HammondCare has announced construction of its new centre of excellence will start immediately.
The news was shared by HammondCare chief executive officer Andrew Thorburn at a launch event alongside Northern Sydney Local Health District CEO Associate Professor Anthony Schembri, Lane Cove mayor Merri Southwood, member for Lane Cove Anthony Roberts and HammondCare executive general manager Felicity Burns.

The new integrated health campus, to be known as HammondCare Greenwich, is the biggest investment in HammondCare’s history, costing an estimated $300 million.
The existing 72-bed Greenwich Hospital building and associated facilities on River Road in Sydney’s lower North Shore will be demolished to allow for new services, including:
- 30 palliative care beds
- 20 older persons mental health beds
- 45 dementia-specific residential aged care beds
- 20 health suites
- a health hub
- community services, including electroconvulsive therapy, imagery, a pharmacy, chapel, café, gym, hydrotherapy pool and hairdresser
- two new serviced seniors living buildings with 89 apartments.
The redevelopment will also feature a new sub-acute hospital with specialist services while the heritage-listed Pallister House will become the new Hammond Innovations headquarters.
Hammond Innovations was launched in early October and brings together the resources of The Dementia Centre, The Palliative Care Centre and The Centre for Positive Ageing to create a new hub that can identify urgent problems, test solutions and deliver real-world solutions to sector challenges.
New seniors living accommodation will be built nearby, providing the necessary support for people to age in place, while residential aged care accommodation in a small household setting for people living with dementia will also be included in the redevelopment.
Planning approval for the concept was provided by the Independent Planning Commission in November 2020, and detailed design approval was granted in March 2024.

Mr Thorburn said the project will be the not-for-profit’s flagship location, and a place where “world-class care and innovation come together” to meet the challenges of complex care for older people in a way not seen in Australia.
“Our vision is that HammondCare Greenwich will be regarded nationally as the place to go for best practice aged care, especially complex dementia and palliative care. It will attract not only those who need it but also those who excel – or want to excel – at delivering it or researching it,” he said.
HammondCare Greenwich is expected to be completed in 2029, and existing healthcare services and staff will be relocated to temporary off-site accommodation throughout construction.
