Retirement living operator Levande has celebrated the start of construction at Cardinal Freeman retirement village in Ashfield this week with a sod-turning ceremony following the demolition of Cardinal Freeman’s original building one.

The site will feature 41 one, two and three-bedroom apartments – meeting demand for modern residential facilities in Sydney’s inner-west. Construction is expected to take 18 months.

Kevin McCoy (Levande)

Levande chief executive officer Kevin McCoy said the project reflected the company’s commitment to creating contemporary communities where retirees can thrive and marks an exciting next chapter for Cardinal Freeman – which has 350 already completed independent living units and almost full occupancy.

“We are proud to invest in villages like Cardinal Freeman to meet the evolving expectations of Australia’s retirees,” Mr McCoy said.

Levande has also progressed with the planning of three new development sites in north-western Sydney, at three new sites in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, and at two more on the Bellarine Peninsula, southwest of Melbourne.

Coupled with the rebuild and expansion of existing sites in Sydney and Melbourne, these projects will deliver almost 1,700 new homes for older Australians and represents a $3 billion pipeline for developments for Levande.

The sod-turning ceremony was attended by Inner West Council mayor councillor Darcy Byrne and the New South Wales state member for Summer Hill Jo Haylen while many Cardinal Freeman residents hosted balcony gatherings.
