Arcare will begin construction today on Glenhaven, its first facility in New South Wales. The 120-bed residence, located in Sydney’s north-west, will offer a mix of permanent and dementia care.

The facility will be also co-located with Living Choice Retirement Village, and will prioritise existing Living Choice residents.

“Co-location will offer existing residents of Living Choice a seamless transition from retirement living to high-level care in their later years. When it comes time to move, residents won’t need to travel far and will enjoy familiar surroundings,” said Arcare CEO Colin Singh.

Mr Singh said Glenhaven would be a five-star facility and include large suites, many with a separate sitting area and balcony. All Arcare properties featured hair salons, ensuites, living areas, theatre rooms, flat screen TVs, formal dining areas, gardens and alfresco cafés.

Arcare currently operates 27 facilities across Victoria and Queensland. Arcare Glenhaven is the first in NSW for the provider, which has also been granted licenses in Oatlands and Warriewood NSW.

Southern Cross Care’s Oakfield Lodge now complete

Southern Cross Care’s Oakfield Lodge was designed in accordance with environmentally-friendly principles

Southern Cross Care (SA&NT) Oakfield Lodge has opened in Mount Barker, offering residential care and overnight respite services.

The organisation began construction on the $25 million, 80-bed facility in 2014. It said the facility had been built in accordance with environmentally-friendly design principles and to reflect the local environment and history of the area. The development team planned the building to respond to the seasons and used local and recovered materials in the construction.

Resident rooms and leisure areas had been created within a winged design to allow for natural light and ventilation, and for views to be captured from the most vantage points, the provider said.

All resident rooms had private ensuite facilities and an outlook to garden areas. The centre included multi-functional activity spaces, café facilities, hairdresser, meeting rooms, dual lifts access, a large cooking kitchen, laundry, staff areas and on site car parking. Outdoor areas include large water tanks, chicken sheds, an aviary, walking trails, sun terraces and raised garden beds.

HammondCare to build $30 million dementia care village

HammondCare has announced plans to build a $30 million dementia care village in Caulfield, which the organisation said would be the first-of-its-kind in Victoria.

The 90-bed village would provide dementia care across eight cottages in a village model, complete with village centre, general store, chapel, studio, salon, workshop, memorial pavilion, gardens and walkways. Included in the development will be two cottages and specially-designed garden areas for a special care program for older people living with severe and challenging behaviours associated with dementia and related organic brain illness.

“Instead of the large institutional approach to aged care that has been common, residents in HammondCare’s Caulfield village will live in small cottages with a home-like feel,” said Seamus van der Westhuizen, state manager of HammondCare Victoria. “Each resident has their own room and ensuite with fully-functional fresh cook kitchens in each cottage, safe and private backyards and a range of design features that make the environment more familiar and navigable for a person with dementia.”

Anglican Care hiring for soon-to-open Kilpatrick Court

Anglican Care’s Kilpatrick Court, to open in June 2016, will accommodate 147 residents and cater for a variety of differing needs, including dementia specific care and respite care.

The organisation is currently running a recruitment campaign, offering over 40 new positions. Full time, part time, and casual employment opportunities are available encompassing nursing, lifestyle and wellbeing, hospitality and maintenance.
