Get ready for some good Christmas reading

The president of Aged and Community Services Australia (ACSA) has urged his industry colleagues to remain involved in the Productivity Commission’s aged care inquiry.

Klaus Zimmerman said the aged care sector had responded well to the inquiry process, with the commission receiving over 450 submissions.

“I’m told that they have received the second highest number of submissions ever,” Mr Zimmerman said.

“The Productivity Commission is due to hand down its draft report in mid-December. In fact, I’m told that it will happen in the third week of December so it should make for some good Christmas reading.”

Despite the industry’s initial response to the commission’s inquiry, Mr Zimmerman said providers need to keep being proactive.

“I urge you all to not only read the draft report but to respond to it as well,” he said.

“I would also ask you to keep lobbying your local MPs so that they maintain the political will and resolve needed to reform our industry.”

Mr Zimmerman warned that if the industry did not come forward with viable solutions to the aged care crisis, other people would.

“Our industry is affected by many things, such as technology…laws and regulations,” he said.

“We as an industry need to adapt to change and we need to be leaders in the change process. If we don’t drive that process, then someone else will.”
