Indigenous health scholarships extended

Applications for the RCNA’s Puggy Hunter Scholarship Scheme have will now be accepted until 22 August.

Applications for the Puggy Hunter Memorial Scholarship Scheme have been extended from this Friday, 8 August to Friday, 22 August.

The scholarships are available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are studying or plan to study in a range of health-related fields through a university or with a registered training organisation.

Courses covered by the scheme include allied health, dental and oral health, enrolled and registered nursing, health service management, health promotion or education, medicine, and mental health.

There are at least 50 scholarships available, offering up to $15,000 per year for full time students and up to $7,500 per year for those studying part time.

The scholarships are funded by Department of Health and Ageing and administered by the Royal College of Nursing Australia.

“These scholarships are particularly significant in 2008 as our country seeks to close the gap in health and education for Indigenous Australians,” says RCNA’s Acting Executive Director, Elizabeth Foley FRCNA.

“The scheme acknowledges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are severely under-represented in the health care profession, and seeks to build those numbers by assisting people to obtain professional qualifications.”

Eligible applicants are welcome to contact RCNA (02 6283 3400) for more information and are encouraged to apply.
