Cooperation is the key for success

Aged care and retirement living operator IRT has a development application on public exhibition.

The community-owned, not-for-profit operator resubmitted the DA in December for a new retirement village in Wollongong after working with the city council to resolve concerns over flood levels and adequate stormwater management at the Towradgi Beach site.

The revised DA proposes the construction of 89 homes including 17 villas, 24 villa-style apartments and 48 apartments with two and three bedrooms, which is more villas and more dwellings overall than in the proposal submitted about 18 months ago.

IRT CEO Patrick Reid said the new village will aim to deliver industry-leading ageing-in-place housing.

“We are passionate about supporting older Australians to enjoy the best quality of life where possible and helping them maintain their independence for longer.”

Every aspect of the village and the homes – roadways, signage, landscaping, fixtures and fittings – have been designed to support residents as they experience the challenges of ageing said Mr Reid.

“For example, the bathrooms and kitchens will be fitted with modern and safe fixtures and fittings, appliances will be installed at easy-to-reach heights, and trip hazards will be minimised.”

Each home will also feature an emergency response system and an in-home 24/7 voice-activated security platform.

As for the outdoor areas, they have been designed to ensure smooth navigation said Mr Reid. “Throughout the grounds, there will be ample rest points with seating, weather protection areas, and wide pathways to accommodate people travelling throughout the village by foot or with walking aids. All signage will be placed at eye height in easy-to-read large font and colours using icons and symbols to assist residents with finding their way.”

The next steps of the development process will be determined following DA approval.
