Gastro kits: coming to a facility near you

The Commonwealth Government has confirmed that its new gastroentiritis kits will be distributed to facilities this month.

The Government has confirmed that it will send out a gastroenteritis awareness and prevention kit to every Commonwealth-funded aged care facility in the country.

The $65,000 plan to distribute the kits to homes was originally announced in July, following an outbreak at a facility in NSW.

The kit explains how to identify the signs and symptoms of an outbreak and how to develop an outbreak management plan.

“These are very practical and common sense kits. They include the basics such as how to wash and dry hands to reduce the spread of infection,” the Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot said.

“Australia’s nursing homes and hostels and their staff provide world-class care and we can never wipe out infectious diseases, we must always look at new ways to improve infection control,” the minister added.

The Department of Health and Ageing stressed that the gastro kits do not replace State and Territory guidelines, but served as another resource tool.
