Government considers airport restrictions

The Federal Government is considering strict rules about what can be built around the nation’s airports.

The Government’s aviation white paper recently released, proposes strict rules about what can be built around airports. This includes the prohibition of proposals to build aged care facilities, nursing homes, hospitals and schools within airport grounds.

Aaron Gadiel, the head of a residential development lobby group, Urban Taskforce, said the proposals would hinder development and were an extension of Federal power.

”In NSW the Department of Planning already makes decision about protecting the use of nationally significant infrastructure – this is just another overlay of red tape,” said Gadiel.

”We wouldn’t want to see vast areas of land around airports being rendered useless because of unjustified sweeping controls. The people who will pay for that are communities who will lose access to jobs and economic activity.”

Under the proposed rules, all non-aviation developments would require the airport to complete a development plan and all building applications would have to be exhibited publicly.
