Govt hands out new veterans grants

Over $1.3 million has been provided to support 98 initiatives around the country.

Almost 100 initiatives supporting veterans, war widows and their families have received support in the latest round of the Commonwealth Government’s Veteran & Community Grants program.

More than $1.3 million in grants has been given to programs aimed at helping veterans to get involved in health and wellbeing initiatives.

Veterans’ Affairs Minister, Alan Griffin said the funding would assist up to 41,000 veterans and their families throughout the countries.

The grants go to organisations that care for the veteran community and are used to provide training, transport and building upgrades.

“Veteran & Community Grants help fund local initiatives that improve access to community care services and encourage social interaction through day clubs, men’s sheds and social excursions,” said Mr Griffin.

“It is important that the veteran community has access to a range of programs where they can learn skills to help them remain independent and active, particularly for the elderly living by themselves.”

Ex-service and community organisations that are interested in applying for funding can click here or call the Department of Veterans’ Affairs on 133 254 (for metropolitan callers) or 1800 555 254 (for non-metropolitan callers).
