The ACT Government has promised that if re-elected, it will introduce a $1.94 million four-year GP locum service for the capital territory’s aged care facilities.

The new program would an ‘in-hours’ medical services to complement existing ‘out-of-hours’ arrangements.

The locum service will operate in two teams – one on Canberra’s northside and the other on the southside.

“[We know] that a good public health system is underpinned by a strong primary health care system,” said Health Minister, Katy Gallagher.

The minister added the service would help provide a continuum of care for aged care residents.

“The service will…ensure that through earlier diagnosis of minor health concerns, a stronger focus will be given to prevention and early intervention.”

The announcement comes about a week after the territory’s opposition announced its key ageing strategy, with a strong focus on dental care for older citizens.

The Canberra Liberals also proposed establishing a ‘land bank’ of sites for future retirement villages and aged care facilities within the nation’s capital.
