More “tough measures” as another home is sanctioned
Problems with medication management and falls management are behind the fourth sanction in Victoria in under three months.
A Victorian aged care facility has had sanctions imposed after serious concerns about medication management were identified.
The risk to residents at Lakes Entrance Aged Care Facility was identified during an unannounced visit from the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency.
Among the problems found at the home were missing medications, overuse of paracetamol, delays in the distribution of antibiotic and issues with self-medication by residents.
Other areas cited by the department included falls management, physiotherapy reviews and “unacceptable” waits for assistance.
“The situation at Lakes Entrance Aged Care is entirely unacceptable,” said the Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot.
“I make no apologies for the Department of Health and Ageing taking tough action.
As a result of the sanctions, a nurse advisor has been appointed to the facility for six months.
The facility will not be able to receive Commonwealth subsidies for new residents for the same period.
The department and the agency will continue to monitor the home.
A formal meeting of residents and family members is being arranged for September 24 at Lakes Entrance Aged Care Facility.
