Minister for Ageing, Mrs Justine Elliot today launched a new dementia resource at Hammond Care’s 7th Biennial International Dementia Conference in Sydney.

The Dementia Resource Guide is aimed at improving the standard of care and quality of life for people living with dementia and provides resources for carers and families. The guide has also been formulated to assist staff and volunteers in residential care homes, community care and hospitals. The guide provides links to resources on 17 areas such as assessment and diagnosis, forward planning, medical treatment and support services.

“Importantly, this guide was developed in consultation with people with dementia, their carers and families, the peak bodies that represent them, service providers and dementia experts,” Mrs Elliot said.

The Dementia Resource Guide has been developed with Australian Government funds of $385,000 from the Dementia Initiative, by a research team at the National Ageing Research Institute. The funds are part of $320 million committed by the Australian Government over five years for dementia research and support. Mrs Elliot said the research team reviewed more than 700 resources to find the best information available on a range of topics relevant to people living with dementia.

It is hoped that the guide will help improve the understanding and management of dementia and that the information provided will assist in planning for the future.

The Dementia Resource Guide is now available at www.health.gov.au/dementia. It will also be available in CD-Rom format from early July by contacting dementia@health.gov.au.
