Scrutiny on Thursday Island facility
The agency and the department have visited a Torres Strait facility where two assaults are alleged to have occurred.
The Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency is this week conducting a comprehensive review audit of a Torres Strait aged care facility where two reports of alleged assault occurred earlier this month.
The agency inspection of the Star of the Sea facility on Thursday Island follows a site visit from the Department of Health and Ageing’s Complaints Investigation Scheme last Friday.
“My primary concern is the health and welfare of residents,” the Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot said in a statement.
“The Department of Health and Ageing is taking the matter seriously. We recognise that it is a very remote facility accessible by sea and plane only, but resident care must always come first,” Mrs Elliot said.
Two employees from the mixed high and low care, 40-bed facility have been stood down and charged with assault.
They are scheduled to appear in court on 11 November.
