Training in the bush

RTOs can apply for funding to deliver training courses to PCWs in regional locations.

Rural and regional aged care providers will be able to take advantage of a Commonwealth program that will provide 1400 new training places in remote locations.

The focus of the latest round of the government’s $30 million Support for Aged Care Training Program is on in-depth training for personal care workers.

The government is inviting registered training organisations (RTOs) to apply for funding under the program to deliver courses through to June 2010.

“This program assists those services that face major barriers to staff training, usually due to their size or distance from a training institution,” said the Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot.

“In recognition of these difficulties, assistance can include travel costs and payment for staff to backfill positions while workers attend courses.

“Funding will also be set aside for a national on-line or satellite education resource,” she said.

Application forms and guidelines for funding under the program are available from the Department of Health and Ageing’s website.

Applications close on Wednesday 8 October 2008. Further information is available from the Aged Care Information Line on 1800 500 853.
