Two homes sanctioned
A facility in South Australia and a facility in Victoria have had sanctions imposed.
The Commonwealth Government has imposed sanctions on two separate aged care facilities.
Last night the Norwood Nursing Home in Oakden, South Australia, and the Yarra Valley Hostel in Yarra Junction, Victoria, were placed under sanction by the Department of Health and Ageing.
Norwood Nursing Home was sanctioned due to ongoing risks to residents following a gastro outbreak earlier this month.
The Yarra Valley Hostel was sanctioned because it failed to rectify existing non-compliance.
It is co-located with the Yarra Valley Nursing Home which was put under sanction on 26 March.
Both facilities are in a rural area of Victoria which was affected by the February bushfires.
The Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot said sanctions are about ensuring that nursing home operators provide proper care for frail and aged Australians.
“The Australian Government will take action when it is necessary and we are committed to improving the care and quality of Australia’s nursing homes and its residents – after 12 years of neglect by the previous government,” she said.
“For the record, the vast majority of nursing homes in Australia provide a world class service and their staff are committed and hardworking.”
