Veterans focus on nutrition

Healthy eating is the focus of Veterans’ Health Week this year and there are over 130 activities to help celebrate.

The focus of this year’s Veterans’ Health Week, 19-25 July, is good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.

To celebrate the week, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) has organised more than 130 healthy eating activities throughout Australia including celebrity chef cook-offs, nutrition expos, healthy eating barbecues and a fishing competition.

Veterans’ affairs minister, Warren Griffin said good nutrition was important because it has so many health benefits.

“Eating a balanced diet can help lower the risk of chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes, improve heart health and energy levels and ultimately make you feel better,” he said.

“Veterans’ Health Week is an opportunity for veterans to get involved in some entertaining and educational activities, reflect on their diet choices and learn how to make some positive changes that will improve their health and fitness in the long term.”

Mr Griffin encouraged all members of the veteran community to get involved in the week’s activities.

“Nutrition is an essential part of healthy living and it is important for veterans and the wider community alike to get involved for life,” he said.
