A South Australian aged care provider has teamed up with the state government and two training services to deliver a new aged traineeship program to mature-aged individuals.

The $132,000 Skilling South Australia project will create 15 new traineeships for mature-aged individuals who want to re-skill to work in residential and home aged care roles.

Home care provider My Care Solution will deliver the program in partnership with registered training organisation Enable College and traineeship support service Mas Experience.

My Care Solution executive director Mark McBriarty said the traineeship recognised the value mature-aged workers could bring to the aged care industry.

“Mature-aged individuals have a lifetime of experience and skills to offer, but it can be difficult to enter or re-enter the workforce at a later age,” Mr McBriarty said.

“At My Care Solution, more than 85 per cent of our workforce is aged 45 or older. They are committed, reliable, eager to learn, and most importantly, they are compatible with our elderly clients.”

SA Minister for Innovation and Skills David Pisoni commended My Care Solution for creating such a well-considered and important project.

“This is a particularly important project, as not only does it create new traineeships in an industry that has not traditionally used the traineeship model, but it also provides job opportunities for mature-aged job seekers to begin a new career in a high growth sector,” Minister Pisoni said.

Pre-training included

Around 90 people have already applied to take part in the program, a spokesperson for My Care Solution told Australian Ageing Agenda last Friday.

The project supports 20 participants undertaking the pre-traineeship program Preparing to Care, which provides a comprehensive understanding of the sector and preparation for beginning a career in aged care.

At least 15 of these participants will take up a traineeship with My Care Solution and complete a Certificate III in Individual Support.

The individual support certificate is designed to provide entry level training for people to work in residential aged care facilities and community and disability care organisations.

“By placing a front-end to our mature-age traineeships, we are ensuring that candidates are well-equipped to embrace a role that is both deeply meaningful and richly rewarding,” Mr McBriarty said.

He encouraged people from all walks of life to consider the opportunities this traineeship and the aged care sector can offer.
